Subscription PDA Reference Resources Available for FSU College of Medicine Faculty, Students and Staff

The following is a list of subscription PDA electronic resources available for download and installation for all FSU CoM faculty, students and staff. Links to the web site for each of these products can be found by selecting PDA Websites on the CoM Library web page. (link above) Instructions for downloading, installing and using each of these products are found by following the link to CoM PDA Instructions from the PDA Websites page. The total value of these resources if purchased individually would exceed $1000.00 annually.

Clinical Evidence -- Published by the British Medical Journal Publishing Group, Clinical Evidence summarizes the current literature on the prevention and treatment of over 200 medical conditions. This resource is available in PDA format for FSU faculty, students and staff. Based on the current, best available evidence, prevention and treatment guidelines are presented as being either beneficial, likely to be beneficial, trade off between benefits and harms, unknown effectiveness, unlikely to be beneficial, and likely to be ineffective or harmful. This also includes background, key messages, and summaries of each treatment. Retail value $99/yr.

Dynamed -- DynaMed is a huge, evidence based reference designed to provide the most useful and current disease information at the point-of-care for health care professionals. Where available, links are provided to full-text electronic resources, including all FSU-available e-journals via a PubMed reference. Retail value: $200/yr. Epocrates Essentials -- Epocrates is the most popular PDA drug reference available. The database is constantly updated every time you synchronize your PDA, and gives you Doc Alerts of breaking medical news. All sections are interlinked for ease of use. Retail value: $149/yr. AARP Ageline (EBSCO) -- abstracts the literature of social gerontology as well as aging-related research from psychology, sociology, social work, economics, public policy, and the health sciences. It covers aging-related issues for professionals in aging services, health, business, law, and mental health. AgeLine also includes selected consumer content.

Access Medicine books and Harrison’s Online – The full Access Medicine package to which the FSU College of Medicine subscribes includes Harrison’s, as well as Hurst’s the Heart, Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited Diseases, and the Lange series in the basic medical sciences and in the clinical sciences. Altogether, there are 43 electronic textbooks and reference books included in this package. Harrrison’s Online is the online version of the book, Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, and contains full text with all images, figure tables, graphics, etc. It has a complete table of contents which is linked and has a searchable index that is updated continuously. Full color atlases of cardiology, dermatology, microbiology, hematology, endoscopy, and others are included. It also has clinical trials information, as well as online pretests for board preparation with answers and explanations. PDA downloads of small selected sections are available.

ACP Journal Club - Contains articles from ACP Journal Club, produced by the American College of Physicians, and Evidence-Based Medicine, produced by the ACP and the British Medical Journal Group. DXplain - DXplain is a computer program designed to provide quick, easy access to a large database of signs, symptoms, and diagnoses, and to remind the user of disorders that might be associated with a set of clinical features. It includes a differential diagnosis generator that provides a ranked list of differential diagnoses based on signs and symptoms entered by the user. PubMed - PubMed, is a service of the National Library of Medicine, which provides access to over 16 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. MEDLINE is the primary database used for getting to the subject content of articles in medicine. There are several ways to get to MEDLINE, including OVID, MD Consult and PubMed. PubMed links directly from the article reference to the full article for all electronic journals available at FSU. DXplain - DXplain is a computer program designed to provide quick, easy access to a large database of signs, symptoms, and diagnoses, and to remind the user of disorders that might be associated with a set of clinical features. It includes a differential diagnosis generator that provides a ranked list of differential diagnoses based on signs and symptoms entered by the user. This resource is limited to use by faculty, students and staff of the College of Medicine as requirement for licensure by the producers of DXplain.

eMedicine - Has over 7,000 physician authors and editors who create thousands of peer-reviewed, disease specific articles. The e-Medicine resource is now publishing over 400 new review articles monthly. Each article incorporates 4 levels of physician peer-review. E-Medicine also includes over 100 useful medical tools and calculators, as well as a clinical image case, radiograph and ECG of the week, and over 30,000 images. E-Medicine has recently added PubMed searches that link to FSU full-text articles on all e-Medicine topics. It includes a Differential Diagnosis Generator as well.

Epocrates Online Premium - ePocrates is a clinically relevant program to aid doctors in their daily care of patients and is both timely and accurate. ePocrates Online Premium features include:
• Over 2,800 drug monographs, including off-label uses.

• Patient education information in English and Spanish.
• Pill identification search (by characteristics or imprint code) and pill pictures.
• Formulary information for hundreds of health plans and hospitals.
• Drug interaction search among up to 50 drugs and/or alternative medicines at once.
• Alternative medicine monographs, clinical tables and guidelines.

Epocrates Online Premium and Epocrates Essentials are also available in PDA format for FSU COM faculty, students and staff. Epocrates Essentials includes Epocrates Rx Pro, Epocrates SxDx (disease and diagnosis reference), and Epocrates Lab (diagnostic and laboratory test reference).

MD Consult - MD Consult is a one-stop virtual library to e-books, e-journals (via an enhanced MEDLINE interface), patient education handouts, medical news, drug information, and clinical guidelines. There are currently 115 full text reference books in MD Consult, over 90 full text current journal titles, and 50 Clinics. MD Consult has a companion resource called FirstConsult. FirstConsult provides information on medical conditions and links seamlessly to MD Consult content. Special note about user names and passwords: You may create your own password for customized services such as use of the PDA resource called MDC Mobile.
